Background: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use is becoming more prevalent and is particularlypopular among adolescents and conventional smokers. E-cigarettes are sometimes regarded as aless harmful alternative to tobacco smoking, and there is some evidence of their potential role as asmoking cessation aid. While the oral health sequelae of conventional smoking are wellestablished,the impact of e-cigarettes on oral health is still unknown. The present study aims tocarry out a bibliographic review regarding oral changes resulting from electronic cigarettesmoking.Methods: Three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase) were systematicallysearched with the following uniterms: “electronic cigarette” OR “e-cigarette” OR “electroniccigarettes” AND “oral health”. Additionally, books and epidemiologic data were used.Nonsystematic literature reviews and articles that did not strictly refer to electronic cigarettes wereexcluded. The independent reviewer extracted data and synthesized the findings.Results: The final sample consisted of ۱۱۳ articles. Extensive dental damage as a result of ecigaretteexplosions were described. Components of e-cigarette have known cytotoxic, genotoxic,and carcinogenic.Conclusions: Findings from this review suggest that a wide range of oral health sequelae may beassociated with e-cigarette use.E-cigarette exposure increased the risk for deterioratingperiodontal, dental and gingival health as well as changes in the oral microbiome and cellulardamage in oral tissues. In addition, electronic cigarette smoking has not demonstrated full healthsecurity. Oral health professionals should not recommend e-cigarettes for smoking cessation butinform patients about their potential risks. Well-designed studies to investigate oral healthoutcomes of e-cigarette use are needed.
