The status of tobacco use among health and medical care personnel: Asystematic review study

Background: Smoking is a serious threat to public health. The evidence indicates a highprevalence of tobacco use, including cigarettes, tobacco, and hookah among people. Consideringthe impact of health care and medical workers on the behavior of their patients as well as thesociety and the important role they have as a role model in correcting the risky behavior ofpatients, smoking among health personnel is of great importance. Therefore, the current study wasconducted with the aim of investigating the status of tobacco smoking among health and medicalcare personnel.Method: In this systematic review, an electronic search using English keywords from thescientific database google scholar, pubmed, SID, scopus, medline in the period from July toOctober ۱۴۰۱ including all published articles, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, clinicaltrials and soon was performed. From the ۱۴۰ articles found in the initial search in the field oftobacco use among healthcare personnel, ۵۰ articles were eligible to be included in the study. Allcollected articles were reviewed and some were removed based on the title, abstract or repetition.Then the selected studies were evaluated based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Theinclusion criteria were studies with regular abstracts and external studies, and the exclusion criteriaincluded repeated articles and review studies.Results: ۵۰ articles were reviewed with the aim of identifying the status of smoking among healthand medical care personnel. Eventually; the state of smoking in health care facilities was foundthat about ۳۰.۲% of the staff use tobaccos, some of them are not aware of the dangers of using it,and most of them continue to use tobacco despite being aware of its harm.Conclusion: Health and medical care personnel are known as models of health in the society, andthe increase in smoking among them, especially in the workplace, encourages more patients tocontinue smoking and not to quit. Therefore, it is necessary to predict a correct method formonitoring the status of tobacco use among health and medical personnel, as well as theimplementation of daily and continuous preventive programs.
