The Effect of Whey Protein Supplement on the Recovery of Muscle Damage in Young Men

Protein intake can improve muscle recovery and reduce the symptoms of muscle damage. Since the timing of whey protein supplementation is very important to observe its effects, in the present study, the effectiveness of whey protein supplement on the symptoms of muscle damage in the period of ۴۸ hours after eccentric exercise was investigated.Sixteen healthy men (age; ۳۳.۰۰ ± ۲.۸ years, height; ۱۸۲.۳ ± ۵.۵۲ cm, weight; ۸۹.۴۰ ± ۶.۰۸ kg) participated in this study voluntarily. They were randomly divided into ۲ groups; whey protein supplement group (n=۸) and placebo group (n=۸). The subjects performed the maximal eccentric protocol (۱۱۰ maximal eccentric contraction of arm flexors) using both hands. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction in biceps curl, visual analogue scale for measurement of muscle soreness and serum levels of creatine kinase a sign of muscle damage were measured before, immediately, ۲۴, ۴۸ hours after exercise. Each subjects consumed ۱.۵ grams per kilogram of body weight whey protein supplement and placebo immediately after exercise. Data were analyzed using the Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Repeated Measures (group ₓ time) and Independent t-test. The statistical significance level adopted was P≤ ۰.۰۵The feeling of muscle soreness and serum levels of creatine kinase in whey protein supplement group was significantly lower than the placebo group in all post-exercise stages except immediately after exercise (P≤ ۰.۰۵).The present study showed that whey protein supplement can improve the symptoms of muscle damage and reduce the muscle pain that occurs after exercise.
