Maintaining muscle mass and function is important throughout the athlete’s lifestyle. While environmental factors such as physical activity and healthy nutrition are well investigated, the contribution of genetic factors is still controversial. Hence, The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a common ACTN۳ polymorphism (rs۱۸۱۵۷۳۹) on body composition factors, especially the SMM percent.We have chosen ۱۰۰ males with normal BMI( ۲۲.۱±۱.۷ kg/m۳ ) and at least five years of professional sports experience in the age range of ۲۰-۲۵ years. After that genomic DNA was isolated and polymorphism of rs۱۸۱۵۷۳۹ was analyzed by using the RFLP-PCR technique. Two groups of ۳۰ athletes with RR & XX genotype were selected and their SMM factor was measured with Olympia ۳.۳ body composition. Finally, results analysis with, independent t-test in SPSS statistical software۲۵ version.The results had shown that there were significant differences in RR & XX polymorphism’s skeletal muscle mass. For the dominant model, RR carriers (N = ۳۰) SMM mean was ۶۵ ± ۳ kg and from XX model carriers(N=۳۰) SMM range was ۵۰ ± ۳ kg .p values below ۰.۰۵ were considered as being statistically significant. By conventional criteria, this difference is considered to be extremely statistically significant. P-value is less than ۰.۰۰۰۱ (p<۰.۰۰۰۱).According to the results of this study, hypertrophy increase in the size of cells (or tissues) in response to various stimuli, and a typical example is muscular hypertrophy in response to exercise. As consequence, exercise stimulates skeletal and cardiac muscle fibers and because of different fiber types in RR and XX genotypes, the SMM factor shows that the rise of hypertrophy in the RR model was significantly higher than XX one.
