Exploring the Effect of Using WhatsApp Group Collaboration Integrated with Instructional Video Clips on Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners’Writing Skill in Online Classes

Writing is one of the hardest skills to master in English. Thus, the following study aimed to explore the effect of an innovative technique to be used in online classes. To this goal, ۳۸ participants took part in an online writing course. The participants then, were divided into experimental and control groups. Both had the same book and syllabus for teaching, the only difference was that the experimental group benefited from writing collaboratively with the help of additional instructional videos which were shown in the class, while the control group wrote individually and with no instructional videos. The data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests and were analyzed by descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test. The results revealed that both groups improved their writing ability, however, the experimental group outperformed the control group in post-test scores indicating the significant effect of writing collaboratively and watching instructional videos. The finding has pedagogical implications for teachers since they can adopt the techniques to have a better outcome from their online classes. Also, learners can take advantage of it to acknowledge the positive effect of watching instructional videos alongside writing collaboratively.
