EFFECTS OF FENNEL FLOWER SEED OIL ON SEMEN QUALITY IN INFERTILE MEN: A RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL

Background and Aim : In decades, wide utilization of herbal drugs has encouraged scientists to determine their impressive effects on health. Since Fennel flower seed has many uses including infertility in herbal medicine, the effects of Fennel flower seed oil on abnormal semen quality in infertile men with abnormal semen quality are of interest.Methods : This study was conducted on Iranian infertile men with inclusion criteria of abnormal sperm morphology less than 30% or sperm counts below 20×10(6)/ml or type A and B motility less than 25% and 50% respectively. The patients in Fennel flower seed oil group (n=40) received 2ml Fennel flower seed oil and placebo group (n=40) received 2ml liquid olive oil three times a day orally for 3 months. At baseline and after 3 months, the sperm count, motility and morphology and semen volume were analyzed in both groups.Results : Results showed that sperm count, motility and morphology and semen volume were improved significantly in Fennel flower seed oil treated group compared with placebo group after 3 months.Conclusion : It is concluded that daily intake of 6ml Fennel flower seed oil for three months improves semen quality in infertile men without any adverse effects
