The Impotance of The Genetic Counseling

Background and Aim : Congenital anomalies, which are considered as the main cause of disability and mortality among the children in the world, are as the most important reason of the referral to genetic counseling centers. This causes that the genetic counseling profession is continuing to develop globally. It started in the United States in 1969 and has continued in other countries of the world like United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa and various countries in Asia. Methods : The review of studies is utilized in this research that the results of their discussion are around the importance of the genetic counseling developing across the world. Its importance is appeared when we know where the genetic counseling status is and how its availability is in the society like our country, Iran.Results : The result of the research from these studies was more percentage in the boys infants than girls ones. The highest prevalence rates belonged to musculoskeletal anomalies, skin anomalies, genitourinary system anomalies and respiratory system, respectively.Conclusion : According to the results, necessity of the genetic counseling, particularly in consanguineous marriages that is in a high rate in our country, is understood. We must be conscious and concerned about the high prevalence of genetic anomalies among infants and their families, too.
