Head lice infestation in Karoon County, Khuzestan Province (2017-2018)

Background: Head lice are tiny wingless insects belonging to order of anoplura, which are a common problem, especially for kids. Head lice infestation results an allergic, itching sensation for the host.Objectives: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of head lice among girl’s primary school in Karoon County, southwest of Iran.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in Karoon County, south-west of Khuzestan Province during 2017 until 2018. About 851 students were taking part in this study. They were interviewed randomly and examined by a medical entomologist A questionnaire with 18 questions, including individual, social, economic, cultural and health information designed. In this research, prevalence of the head lice was presented and data were analyzed in univariate logistic and multivariate regression models.Results: The prevalence of head lice was calculated 23.38% among girl’s elementary school. About 69.3% of infected students with eggs, nymphs and adult lice were stayed in urban areas. Fathers and mothers of the most infected girls were employed and housewife, respectively. It should be noted that 93.4% of their fathers and 87.5% of their mothers were educated. The results of univariate logistic regression indicated that the prevalence of pediculosis was not related to the location, the number of students in class, healthcare teacher at school, mother’s job, family size, father’s education, hair type, presence of dandruff, previous treatment types. Furthermore, Multivariate logistic regressions predict that the chances of students whose father was unemployed would be 1.5 times higher than those whose father was jobless. Also, the chance of those have permanent head cover at home are 4.1 times higher than others.Conclusion: In regards to the high prevalence of head lice in the present study, the health center of Karoon County needs to change its policy for parasite control and treatment by increase the awareness of families about the insect
