چکیده مقاله:

The imbalance in the redox characteristics of body environments is named as Oxidative stress, which in turn can be the consequence of production of reactive species, exposure to pollutants or decrease capacities of endogenous antioxidant systems. Studies has provided a considerable background for the role of oxidative stress in a wide spectrum of pathologic processes, including ageing, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, pulmonary, rheumatologic, renal, and hepatic diseases. Over the past decades, there were many struggles to identify markers for oxidative stress, and some tests from different molecular sources have been suggested. But less of them are designed for detecting the balance of oxidants and anti-oxidants. The concentration of oxidants and antioxidants in serum can be measured, separately. While in many disease and pathologic condition we need to determine the oxidant-antioxidant balance. Many studies have mentioned that antioxidants can be used to prevent and treat many pathological conditions; nevertheless, a globally accepted method doesn’t exist to evaluate the necessity and effect of antioxidant therapy in oxidative conditions. Pro-oxidant Antioxidant balance assay is a new way to evaluate the equilibrium between oxidant and anti-oxidant agents. Increasing numbers of articles has been published in recent years describing applications of PAB assay in clinical and clinical related settings. So, we found it essential to review literature to provide a better insight. This method, which was introduced first by Hamidi Alamdari et al. 2008, is described and reviewed in brief.
