According to daily increase for water and electricity energy demand, design and build of storage and hydroelectric dams are rapidly grows. Some of them are in group of earth fill dams. in earth fill dam considerable volume of body is related to shell and shell material is select from coarse aggregate sources mostly, so providing of this material will take more costs and any decreasing in volume or transportation distance will economize the project certainly. In the current study our purpose is to consider and discus about correlation of shear Strength parameters and abrasion strength parameters obtained from shear & abrasion tests so that by performing very simple tests such as Los Angeles we would be able to estimate shear strength parameters. One of the primary tests usually suggest to determining quality of shell aggregate is Los Angeles Test which is used to measure resistance of aggregates against any environmental impact or abrasion forces There are some criteria which have been recommended by the researchers for minimum allowable abrasion strength of materials are used for filter and riprap materials in dam works but not for shell materials. Shell materials have different application and performance in comparison with coarse aggregates are used in road or riprap. Therefore we could not use the above mentioned criteria in shell's material.In current research five coarse aggregate sources from Zanjan province earth fill dams in west of Iran were selected and considered carefully.Laboratoric test results indicates that in the coarse aggregates friction angle is inversely related to Los Angeles results and as the Los Angeles lost is increase the friction angle is decrease. Also some significant relations have been found between dilation angle, shear stiffness and Los angles results. SPSS software used to determine significance level of relationships we have suggested.
