چکیده مقاله:

Dust storm is increasingly threatening all ecosystems in western part of Iran especially forest ecosystems, causing a significant reduction in their stability. Due to covering most part of Zagros forest, Persian oak (Quercus brantii) is at the front line of the attack. The majority of deaths of the trees are related to this species. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dust in a simulated condition on the seedlings of Persian oak. The oak seedlings were put in the chamber at three periods and three concentrations of dust. The leaf and wood samples were collected and the leaf stomata features, growth ring and vessel features were examined. The results showed no more variation in stomata features; however, growth ring, vessel number and diameter were significantly changed. No differences in stomatal features could be attributed to the short-period of the treatment. The changes in wood traits are in line with the hypothesis that stress might disrupt the hormonal regulation of wood formation and also the capability of the tree to conduct water. To sum up, it can be concluded that dust storm can negatively affect the wood formation and structure and has a potential to change the leaf features.
