The Impact of Task-Based Composition on Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners’ Argumentative Essay Writing

This study explored the effectiveness of Task-based Language Teaching on the development of learners’ writing skills ingeneral, and it also endeavored to examine the effect of task-based composition task on Iranian EFL learners’argumentative essay writing ability. In this study, 60 intermediate students were selected randomly and were assignedrandomly into one experimental group and one control group after sitting on a language proficiency test. The pretestsof writing were administered to both groups. After instruction for each group, both two groups received the posttest.The results of the paired samples t-tests of the groups indicated that participants of both groups significantlyoutperformed on the posttest measures of speaking. Upon reviewing the results of the independent samples t-testconcerning writing performance of two groups, it was revealed that the experimental group significantly outperformedthe other after the intervention indicating that task-based composition task helped learners improve their argumentativeessay writing ability. The study suggests some implications for language teaching methodology, syllabus design,materials development, and assessment.
