The Effect of Willpower Workshop on Anxiety, Depression, and the Granovsky Excitement Components in the Students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences; 2016-2017

Background: The current study aimed at evaluating the effect of willpower workshop on anxiety, depression, and the Granovsky excitement components among the students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. Methods: Accordingly, the effect of 2 different workshops of sleep-awakening and willpower on the students in terms of the aforementioned complications were evaluated. The study population was consisted of the students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the academic year 2016-2017. The study sample size included 140 students selected by the simple random sampling method from the study population; the subjects then were allocated into the 2 equal groups of intervention (willing) and control, each of 52 individuals, by the simple random assignment method using the table of random numbers and computer. Data collection instruments were the Granovsky cognitive emotion regulation scale and the Beck depression and anxiety inventories. The data were collected twice; beforeintervention and after the intervention (9 months after the study completion and holding the workshops). The control subjects received no intervention, but were interviewed every 3 months. The intervention group participated in workshops held by professors and experts familiar with the methods of strengthening the willpower and coping with stresses. The subjects in the intervention group were interviewed weekly and the trained materials were followed up. In addition, they were also interviewed every 3 months. After a 9-month follow-up, 38 subjects in the control group and 40 ones in the intervention group, totally 78 persons, completed the questionnaires and the study course. Results: The results of the current study indicated no significant differences in demographic variables and pretest scores between the groups, whichindicating the homogeneity of the groups. In other words, there were no significant differences between the groups regarding demographic characteristics before the intervention (P > 0.05). In addition, to compare the intervention and control groups, the Mann-Whitney U test was used and the results showed a significant difference in posttest results between the study groups (P <0.05). Also, there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results of each group (P <0.05). Conclusion: Results of the current study indicated that training the stress coping and willpower strengthening skills, based on the Granovsky excitement components, could promotepsychophysical health and reduce anxiety and stress among the studied students
