چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: To evaluate the effect of oral Ceratonia siliqua (Carob) on the sperm parameters in idiopathic infertile men. Methods: In this triple blinded randomized controlled trial, fifty idiopathic infertile men were allocated into one of two groups. The first group received Carob powder capsules, 500mg, three times a day for 90 days and the second group received vitamin E capsules same as intervention group. Analysis was based on intention to treat. Results: The mean of sperm count increased from 49.08 to 60.22, and from 47.64 to 58.88 million in the carob and placebo groups, respectively (aMD = 1.124 million, 95% CI: -12.892 to 15.141).There was a significant increase in the Carob group (MD = 11.14 million, 95% CI: 0.76 to 21.51(. The mean percent of motile sperms increased from 45.90% to 52.90% in the carob group, and decreased from 55.23% to 38.10% in the control group (aMD = 17.22%, 95% CI: 8.53 to 25.92). No significant increase was shown in the sperm motility in the Carob group (MD = 15.66%, 95% CI: -2.45 to 16.45(. The mean percent of sperms with normal morphology increased from 11.52% to 67.05%, and from 10.20% to 77.47% in the carob and placebo groups, respectively (aMD = -10.88%, 95% CI: -22.30 to 0.536). Sperm morphology showed significant increase in the both groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The positive effect of Carob capsule in comparison to vitamin E capsule was significant in terms of sperm motility, but not significant for morphology and count.
