IMPROVEMENT IN SPERM QUALITY AND DNA FRAGMENTATION WITH BEE POLLEN SUPPLEMENTATION: A CASE REPORT

Background and Aim: Infertility is a private, social, and economic problem. It is defined as the inability to conceive a pregnancy within 1 year. Some natural antioxidants can improve sperm quality and help infertile patients. We here report a patient with idiopathic infertile who had been trying to have a child for 8 years, but he was unsuccessful.Methods: A 32-year-old non-smoker, overweight man referral from urologist due to oligospermia. His infertility diagnosed as idiopathic. He had been trying to have a child for 8 years, and the first five years received antioxidant supplements but he was unsuccessful. Bee pollen in powder form was prepared and administered to the patient for two months.Results: After the intervention, all the semen parameters except motility graded, increased. The inflammatory markers decreased due to supplementation. Also after 8 weeks, an increase in testosterone level, and a decrease in FSH, LH, and prolactin level was seen. Survey of Sperm DNA fragmentation indicated that this percent after supplementation reduced from 32.4% to 12.7%. Conclusion: The use of bee products in medicine has a history in the old world. Bee pollen is rich in flavonoids that a few of them involved in may relatively engage in some of the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. In this study, we showed that spouse of an idiopathic infertile man become pregnant after supplementation with bee pollen.
