The prevalence of positive bacterial cultures in different regions of Bandar Abbas city during the final three months of 2017

Introduction: Accurate identification of hospital bacterial infections plays a significant role in community health promotion, length of stay reduction, proper administration of antibiotics, and prevention of antibiotic resistance.Methods: This descriptive study investigated the results of blood, urine, throat or sputum, eye, cerebrospinal fluid, stool and dermal ulcer cultures of all patients admitted in Bandar Abbas pediatric hospital during the final three months of 2017.Results: Of 2697 blood cultures, 183 bacterial cultures were reported positive with staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus epidermidis, Gram-Negative Bacilli, and viridans staphylococcus aureus as the most frequent pathogens in these cultures. Besides, among 3149 urine cultures, 210 cultures were positive and the most frequent pathogens involved were E. coli, Gram-Negative Bacilli, and Klebsiella. Also, from 63 throat cultures, 30 cultures were reported positive and the most frequent pathogens included staphylococcus epidermidis, Gram-Negative Bacilli, and Acinetobacter. Of a total of 70 ocular cultures, 27 cultures were positive with most frequently Gram-Negative Bacilli, E. coli, and Serratia. Besides, a total of 2 cultures out of evaluated cerebrospinal fluid cultures were positive with mostly Acinetobacter and Serratia. As such, 4 cultures out of 5 ulcer cultures were positive with staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter, Citrobacter, and staphylococcus epidermidis as most frequent pathogens in these cultures. Finally, all 37 stool cultures were reported negative.Conclusion: Species Identification in bacterial cultures may contribute to the proper administration of antibiotics leading to reduced length of hospitalization and improved child s health.
