چکیده مقاله:
Brain tissue classification of magnetic resonance images is critical to diagnose abnormalities in brain . Finite mixture models (FMMs) are effective tools for clustering in brain imaging . Fitting this model to the data leads to a sophisticated optimization problem which is diffecult to solve by standard approaches such as the expectation - maximization (EM) algorithm . In this paper , we apply two global optimization algorithms for the FMM parmeter estimation problem. The first approach is based on genetic algorithm and the other one is self - annealing EM - algorithm . The applied genetic algorithm reduces the premature convergence to its local minimum by using blended crossover ; furthermore, it introduced a new permutation operator for the purpose that it allows to impose biologically meaningful constraints to the FMM parameter values .The self - annealing EM algorithm is a new method for fitting mixture models to multivariate data without external initialization.
