The relationship between transportation and urbanization: Tehran case study

Transportation routes have been the backbone of city texture form long time ago and have a significant role in different aspects of urban development and urban fringes. Interaction with transportation systems and urban development depends on understanding components of each one. Population density, urban form, how and when the expansion of public transport will happen, are the key elements which play important roles in understanding this interaction. In this paper, while studying the interaction between transport and urban development; Tehran spatial development has been investigated and road network formation in this city has been presented. Then, the appropriate combination of density/transport mode to create a sustainable transport development has been discussed. According to the results of this study, developing countries should examine issues in developing public transport in macro scale to achieve sustainable urban development. Moreover, this paper reveals that Tehran urban transport network was planned based on developing roads and highways networks from beginning which by increasing urban challenges; public transport has been developed increasingly.
