چکیده مقاله:

Objective: Artemia is widely distributed in salterns and other hypersaline environments world wide. The genus is composed of a complex of diploid bisexual species. It is one of the major food organism used for culturing aquatic species. The nauplius and especially the cyst of Artemia can be contaminated with various bacterial and fungal agents. This may lead to poor hatchability of cysts and disease transmission to cultured aquatic species. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of formalin (an antifungal agent) and chloramphenicole (a broad-spectrum antibiotic) on hatching of Artemia urmiana cysts. Method & Materials: The cysts were prepared and four treatments were done on four groups. First group was as control, second group received chloramphenicole (60 ppm), third group received formalin (100 ppm), and forth group was disinfected with 5% sodium hypochlorite (200 ppm). After 24 hours, hatching percent and hatching efficiency were determined. The effects of used agents on the hatching of Artemia urmiana cysts were tested at the density of 1 gram cyst/l. Results & Conclusion: The results showed that hatching was significantly improved with chloramphenicole group compared to control and disinfected groups (p > 0.05). We suggest that formalin was properly effective to control fungal contamination of cysts. There were no significant differences between the control and disinfected groups.
