Willingness to communicate and extrinsic motivation: How much do they correlate in Iranian EFL context

This study examined the relationship between willingness to communicate (WTC) and extrinsic motivation among 133 intermediate English major learners, who were selected from among 164 ones through administering a proficiency test. This study was based on a hybrid framework of the second language willingness to communicate (L2 WTC) model and the self-determination theory (SDT) as the motivational framework. Participants were given a questionnaire which comprised of two parts for measuring their L2 WTC and extrinsic motivation. The results of correlational analysis revealed that extrinsic motivation is positively and significantly related to L2 WTC. However, it was concluded that extrinsic motivation accounts for a small proportion of variation in L2 WTC.
