چکیده مقاله:

Safe and effective dental waste management is the basic need for providing high quality of care. Despite the current emphasis on improving the safety and quality in managing healthcare, there is a significant gap between the public perceptions of understanding the relationship of healthcare waste management to that of community environment. Dental waste is an unavoidable by-product consisting of hazardous substances, which can be dangerous to the health of the community and the environment. The healthcare waste generated by dental practices is different from hospital waste and can contribute to adverse events much more aggressively. The method of analysis includes the review of literature on dental waste generation, composition and analysis of previous and current studies available in order to identify the current concept of dental waste management. Analysis of the literature revels that the biomedical hazards generated from health care can lead to significant adverse events in the long term. Hence it is vital that there is a direct relationship between dental waste management and community environment. Fortunately there are studies indicating this very disturbing effect of specific dental waste materials; however these issues are not given enough of emphasis. The second issue identified is that due to negligible immediate impacts of waste management the government and private organisations are not considering the dental waste management to be incorporated as a strong entity. Lastly, there is no measuring tool available to measure and also to identify the impacts of healthcare waste management on patients, environment and also the community. Therefore this study provides an overview on the topic of dental waste management and recommends appropriate basic measures which can reduce the hazardous impacts of dental waste. The recommendations discussed include implementation of a framework for improving the safety of the dental waste management for the period of six months, evaluating the framework after implementation, reviewing the strategic framework with the dental association or responsible organisations for further analysis and lastly proposing this strategic framework to the safety and quality standards.
