A scalable blind watermarking approach for digital images in wavelet domain is proposed in this paper. In the logo (watermark) insertion process a multiresolution decomposition of the logo image is inserted into the wavelet decomposed image. The logo insertion starts from the lowest frequency subband of the decomposed image and each decomposed logo subband is inserted into its counterpart subband of the wavelet image. The watermarked image does not show any perceptual degradation. To test the scalability features of the approach and robustness of the watermark against image compression, the watermarked image was encoded by SPIHT and then decoded at different bitrates. Multiple spatial resolution levels of the logo are progressively detectable from the decoded watermarked image. Experimental results show that the watermark is robust against lossy compression and noise attacks. Even at very low bitrates at least a lower resolution of the logo is completely detectable. This approach could efficiently provide security for progressive visual image transmission especially over heterogeneous networks, where different end-users need to be differently (in quality and resolution) served according to their device capability and network access bandwidth.
