Porous Carbon Prepared from Dogwood Stone for Environmental Applications

In this work dogwood stone was utilized as precursor for preparation of porous carbon. Chemical treatment with zinc chloride was employed to improve the surface activity of the carbon particles. FTIR analysis showed the existence of various functional groups on the structure. Morphology of the samples was studied by SEM showing numerous pores and cavities in the structure. BET surface area of the particles was measured to be as high as 1240 m2 g-1 with a total pore volume of 0.6 cm3g-1 measured by BJH method. The sample was then applied as adsorbent for removal of methylene blue (MB) as a model pollutant from aqueous solutions and showed very effective dye removal ability.
