Synthesis and characterization of B4C-TiB2-TiC nanocomposite by mechanical alloying process

In this research, the B4C-TiB2-TiC nanocomposite powder was synthesized via mechanical alloying (MA) of Ti and B4C powders with molar ratio of 3:2, respectively. In order to study the formation mechanism of this nanocomposite, the structural changes of powder particles during MA and after annealing were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The morphology and microstructure of initial and ball milled powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. It was found that the B4C-TiB2-TiC nanocomposite was formed completely after 30 h of MA with the particle size less than 100 nm. At early stages of MA, C element diffuses in to Ti structure and the TiC compound is formed. Then, with diffusion of B element in to Ti structure at longer milling times the TiB2 phase is formed.
