The Effects of 8 Weeks HIIT Exercise Training on Spirometry Parameters: Relationship with TGF-α Gene Expression

TGF-α has an important role in Lung function that leads to improvement of respiratory indexes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of 8 weeks HIIT exercise training on pulmonary function indexes and their relationship with TGF-α gene expression. Twenty-four healthy middle-aged men were volunteered in this study and randomly divided into control (n=12) and exercise (n=12) groups. Exercise group performed HIIT exercise training (30 min/day, 3 days/week at 60-90% of heart rate reserve) for 8 weeks. Blood pressure, heart rate, spirometry parameters including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory volume in first second (FEV1), body composition, VO2 max and blood samples for transforming growth factor-α gene expression was measured 24 hours before and after the HIIT exercise training period. Our data have been analyzed by independent t-test and pearson correlation coefficient on SPSS software. The result showed that FEV1 (p<0.002),FVC (p<0.001) and PEF (p<0.004) levels in exercise group increase significantly after 8 weeks high intensity interval training. Also TGF-a gene expression reduced significantly in the exercise group compared to control group (p<0.001). A significant negative relationship was observed between TGF-α gene expression and FEV1, FVC and PEF in the exercise group after period training (r₌ 0/571 p₌ 0/033). The investigation result showed that exercise leads to reduction of TGF-α gene expression that finally prevents from surfactant secretion reduction in epithelial cells of the lung and improve respiratory functional indexes in middle-aged men.
