چکیده مقاله:
Multi-word expressions constitute the building blocks of discourse, contributing to fluent expression of ideas and identification with discourse communities. Over the past several decades, researchers have investigated various types of such expressions, their characteristics and subtle nuisances, as well as their structure, function, and frequency, with the aim of helping facilitating language learning. Lexical bundles, as one type of multi-word expressions defined as statistical tendency of words to co-occur, have very recently appealed to English for Academic purposes (EAP)researchers because they render academic discourse as natural as possible. In the present study, adopting a corpusdriven approach, the researcher examined the frequency, structure, and function of lexical bundles in a 4,370,630 million-word corpus across seven Psychology sub-disciplines comprising 1,452 research articles in psychology (RAP) and consisting of two sub-corpora: English corpus (EC) and Iranian corpus (IC). The corpora were analyzed, using WordSmith Tools computer programme (version 6) to identify the frequency and dispersion of lexical bundles. The analysis of the data showed that there were 144 4-word lexical bundles in RAP Corpus. Furthermore, 254 4-word lexical bundles and 116 4-word lexical bundles were identified in EC and IC, respectively. In terms of the shared 4- word lexical bundles, 37 lexical bundles were common between EC and IC too. The findings of the study showed that Iranian writers used not only fewer lexical bundles but also different structural and functional lexical bundles than did English writers. Implications of the findings of the present study for vitally significant role of lexical bundles in EAP programs, graduate students, and material designers as well as suggested paths for future research are discussed.
