Total Polyphenol Content of Tea imported in Iran

Polyphenols in tea, one of the most popular beverages brewed from leaves of tea plant (Camellia sinensis L.), have been known for their antioxidant properties. They play an important role in the prevention of various diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. The objective of this work was to determine the total polyphenol content tea imprted in Iran.five samples of different brands were analyzed. The total polyphenol content was determined according to the International Organization for Standardization method (ISO) 14502-1 for the determination of substances characteristic of green and black tea. the total polyphenol concentration in black tea was found to vary from 17.02 ± 0.74 to 10.2±0.23% of gallic acid equivalents (GAE). This is the first systematic screening for the quantification of polyphenols in tea commercialized in Iran markets. The results obtained here in allow one to conclude that teas imported are of good quality.
