چکیده مقاله:

Dementia represents one of the most significant global health challenges of the ۲۱st century, affecting over ۵۷ million people worldwide in ۲۰۲۱, with nearly ۱۰ million new cases diagnosed annually. As the largest group of healthcare professionals providing direct, continuous care, nurses occupy a central position in the assessment, management, and support of individuals living with dementia (PlwD) across all care settings. This article synthesizes evidence from high-quality sources, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses indexed in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, to examine the multifaceted roles of nurses in dementia care. Key roles encompass early recognition and assessment, implementation of person-centered interventions, behavioral and psychological symptom management (BPSD), family caregiver education and support, and coordination of interprofessional care. Evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and mixed-methods studies demonstrates that nurse-led interventions significantly alleviate depression and improve quality of life (QoL) among PlwD, although effects on cognitive function remain inconsistent. Nurses face substantial challenges, including knowledge gaps, high workloads, and organizational barriers, particularly in acute hospital settings. Through education, training, and policy support, the nursing profession can enhance dementia care quality, reduce caregiver burden, and promote dignity and well-being.
