An Overview of Nanomaterial-Based Novel Disinfection Technologies: Future Alternatives for Medical Applications

چکیده مقاله:

Disinfection is a critical stage in controlling infectious diseases. Various disinfectants are available with different properties. Antimicrobial resistance and allergic diseases are common outcomes of unconscious antiseptic use. There is a growing demand for improved disinfection approaches due to microorganisms resistant to numerous antimicrobial agents. Nanotechnology has developed as a new promising technology for nanomaterials synthesis, producing particles in the nanometer size range, which display antimicrobial effects due to their high surface-area-to-volume ratio and distinctive chemical and physical properties. The bactericidal effects of different metallic nanoparticles containing copper, titanium, zinc, and silver have been well known. This manuscript aims to review the recent advances in bacterial disinfection using nanomaterials. The quick research rate and noticeable progress in this area dictate the timely compilation and dissemination of the latest introductions to this field. Thus, current literature gaps are also highlighted, and reported discrepancies are pinpointed so that roadmaps for future studies may be developed.
