The impact of smart urban furniture on social interactions in urban spaces

Urban public spaces are regarded as highly significant, as they facilitate the formation of collective culture and constitute primary settings for social interaction. It is therefore essential to consider users' needs in order to create desirable urban spaces that foster social interaction and enable engagement in a wide range of activities, including relaxation, recreation, and work. This research examines the role of urban physical components and the integration of smart furniture technologies in facilitating social interactions among community members in urban spaces. The article reviews and analyzes relevant literature to examine the field of urban furniture and its evolution toward the integration of smart technologies, as well as their impact on social interactions. The results demonstrate that the integration of natural elements (such as trees, flowers, and water features), along with the use of sustainable materials and intelligent urban furniture, significantly enhances social interactions, accessibility, and user engagement in public spaces, thereby improving urban livability by fostering communication among diverse user groups and supporting inclusivity.
