Integrating SWOT analysis and fuzzy optimization for evaluating fire and gas detection technologies in the natural gas processing plants

This research work aims at evaluating the fire and gas detection technologies in the natural gas processing plants. For handling this goal, this work integrates strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis and combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) algorithm under the fuzzy set theory as a hybrid fuzzy optimization model for the operations of the processing plants of the natural gas energy sector in Iran. Five fire and gas detection technologies including A₁) multi spectrum infrared (MSIR), A₂) combined ultraviolet (UV) / infrared (IR) technology, A₃) UV technology, A₄) intelligent visual (IV) technology, and A₅) IR technology are assessed for the decision-making process. For this assessment, the key SWOT of these technologies is identified, and then the fuzzy set-based CoCoSo algorithm is used for ranking the technologies and selecting the optimal and reliable technology for implementation. The results of assessing decision-making technologies relative to decision factors and subfactors-based key strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats are presented as a ranking in ascending order from the first to the fifth technology (e.g., A₁ > A₂ > A₄ > A₅ > A₃). This ranking indicates that MSIR technology (A₂) is proposed as the optimal technology for the implementation in Iran's natural gas processing plants. As a result, developing MSIR technology should be highly promoted for increasing process safety and ensuring overall protection of facilities against fire and optimal protection.
