Artificial Intelligence Applications in Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Project Management: A PMBOK® ۸th Edition Framework

The oil, gas, and petrochemical industries represent some of the most complex project-driven sectors globally, characterized by massive capital investments, multi-stakeholder environments, operational uncertainties, and stringent safety requirements. The release of PMBOK® Guide ۸th Edition (۲۰۲۴) marks a paradigmatic shift toward principle-based project management with explicit integration of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). This paper systematically analyzes AI applications within oil and gas project management aligned with PMBOK ۸ principles and Appendix X۳ guidelines. We propose an integrated AI-PMO framework specifically designed for energy sector implementation, validated through EPC petrochemical project case analysis. Our findings demonstrate that AI-enabled project management systems can enhance predictive accuracy, mitigate operational risks, optimize resource allocation, and improve decision-making velocity while maintaining governance standards.
