Aligning Sustainability Education with Petroleum Engineering: A Strategy for Transformative Learning

Urgent global challenges, particularly environmental, necessitate an emphasis on sustainability-focused education in engineering. This is especially vital for petroleum engineering, which directly intersects with energy production, environmental impact, and natural resource management. This paper proposes a conceptual and pedagogical model for embedding sustainability within petroleum engineering education. Drawing on principles of transformative learning, systems thinking, and interdisciplinary integration, the study outlines curricular, instructional, institutional, and applied strategies for fostering sustainability competencies. It reviews current practices, analyzes systemic challenges, and presents actionable recommendations for programs aimed at developing petroleum engineers equipped to navigate and shape a sustainable energy future.
