Beyond Tradition: Leveraging the Turkmen Horse for Sustainable Regional Development, Cultural Heritage Preservation, and Equine Tourism in Gonbad-e Kavus, Iran

The Turkmen horse is one of Iran's most valuable indigenous equine breeds and represents a unique combination of historical legacy, cultural identity, and socio-economic potential. While the breed has long been recognized for its endurance, speed, and adaptability, its contribution to sustainable regional development remains insufficiently explored in academic literature. This paper investigates the multidimensional role of the Turkmen horse in promoting sustainable development in Gonbad-e Kavus, Golestan Province, through an integrated analysis of cultural heritage preservation, rural economic development, and equine tourism.Using an interdisciplinary descriptive-analytical approach, the study examines how scientific breeding programs, strategic investment, heritage conservation, tourism planning, and institutional cooperation can transform the traditional horse industry into a sustainable economic sector. The findings indicate that the Turkmen horse possesses considerable capacity to generate employment, strengthen regional branding, stimulate entrepreneurship, promote cultural continuity, and enhance Iran's position within international equestrian networks. Nevertheless, several barriers—including fragmented management, inadequate infrastructure, limited international marketing, and insufficient application of modern breeding technologies—continue to constrain this potential.The paper argues that sustainable development of the Turkmen horse industry requires coordinated policies integrating scientific research, public-private partnerships, digital innovation, genetic conservation, environmental sustainability, and community participation. Such an integrated framework can preserve an important element of Iran's intangible cultural heritage while simultaneously creating new opportunities for economic diversification and sustainable tourism. The Turkmen horse should therefore be regarded not only as a historical and cultural symbol but also as a strategic regional asset capable of supporting long-term sustainable development.
