Human-Centered Leadership in the Age of AI: A Systematic Review of How Leaders Foster Trust, Purpose, and Well-being When Algorithms Drive Work

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into organizational processes has fundamentally altered the landscape of workplace leadership. As algorithmic systems increasingly govern task allocation, performance monitoring, and even strategic decision-making, questions have emerged about the capacity of human leaders to preserve the relational, ethical, and emotional dimensions of leadership that sustain organizational well-being. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from thirty-three peer-reviewed studies and scholarly reports published between ۲۰۲۲ and ۲۰۲۶ to examine how leaders can foster trust, purpose, and employee well-being when algorithms drive work. Guided by a PRISMA-informed framework, this review identifies five thematic clusters: (۱) the redefinition of leadership identity in AI-augmented workplaces; (۲) trust-building mechanisms in algorithmically governed environments; (۳) emotional intelligence as a core human leadership competency; (۴) psychological safety, ethical leadership, and organizational well-being; and (۵) purpose cultivation and meaning-making as antidotes to algorithmic dehumanization. The findings suggest that human-centered leadership serves not as an alternative to AI adoption but as its essential complement—anchoring technological efficiency within structures of human dignity, ethical accountability, and relational authenticity. Implications for leadership theory, organizational practice, and future research directions are discussed.
