Predicting Marital Emotional Disengagement Through Early Maladaptive Schema Interactions and Attachment Insecurity Among Couples Seeking Psychological Services

Marital emotional disengagement is characterized by reduced intimacy, emotional responsiveness, and mutual support, threatening relationship stability and psychological well-being. Although early maladaptive schemas and attachment insecurity have each been linked to relationship difficulties, their combined role in predicting emotional disengagement remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated whether interactions between early maladaptive schemas and attachment insecurity predict marital emotional disengagement among couples seeking psychological services. A quantitative cross-sectional correlational design was employed using standardized psychological measures, and the proposed model was evaluated through hierarchical regression and structural equation modeling. The findings indicated that both maladaptive schemas and attachment insecurity significantly predicted marital emotional disengagement, while their interaction further improved the model's predictive power. These results suggest that integrating Schema Therapy and attachment theory provides a more comprehensive understanding of emotional disengagement and may support more effective psychological assessment and intervention for distressed couples.
