Tolkien’s Insubordination: Deviations from On Fairy-Stories in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

Tolkien’s seminal work On Fairy-Stories (۱۹۴۷) stands as one of the most influential theoretical frameworks in fantasy literature, articulating a vision of fantasy as sub-creation—the human artist’s godlike forging. This theory champions three cardinal virtues: recovery (renewed vision of the familiar), escape (legitimate flight from modern ugliness and mortality), and consolation through eucatastrophe (the sudden joyous turn evoking transcendent Joy). Yet Tolkien’s own masterworks, The Hobbit (۱۹۳۷) and The Lord of the Rings (۱۹۵۴–۱۹۵۵), exhibit profound and generative insubordination to these theoretical ideals. This study explores how narrative exigencies, biographical realities, and the organic evolution of Tolkien’s legendarium led to systematic deviations from his own theoretical prescriptions. Through detailed analysis of sub-creational fractures (inconsistencies in lore and character development), eucatastrophic dilutions (joy tempered by enduring loss and trauma), and tonal dissonances (shifts from whimsical adventure to grim epic realism), I argue that Tolkien’s creative practice complicates and enriches his theoretical framework rather than undermining it. This paper demonstrates how these insubordinations reveal the dynamic tension between theoretical purity and creative practice. Tolkien’s wartime experiences, his evolutionary writing process, and his deepening theological vision infuse his legendarium with a hybrid vigour that ultimately expands fantasy’s capacity to engage with the complexities of the ‘Primary World’. Rather than viewing these deviations as flaws, this study contends they affirm sub-creation as an incarnational act—vital precisely in its human imperfection—offering modern readers not pristine Faërie but a scarred, deeply resonant recovery that mirrors the ambiguities and costs of human experience while maintaining hope in the possibility of meaningful consolation.
