Iraqi students’ Perceived language proficiency and their daily use of English

English language is a primary key to understanding academic materials and scientific sources, and students' ability in the four skills strongly affects their academic performance. This study investigates perceived English proficiency among undergraduate students at Thi Qar University, Iraq. Moreover, it examines the students' perceptions about their daily use of English. A checklist was distributed among ۱۰۰ students. The results showed that students rated their reading skills highest (M = ۳.۴۲) and speaking skills lowest (M = ۳.۱۳). Listening (M = ۳.۳۱) and writing (M = ۳.۱۹) fell in between. Regarding daily use, students reported frequent engagement with English through internet use (M = ۴.۰۴) and watching movies or series (M = ۴.۰۱), but lower frequency in speaking with others (M = ۳.۵۲). The findings indicate moderate self-perceived proficiency with notable challenges in productive skills, while out-of-class exposure to English is relatively high.
