چکیده مقاله:

Needs analysis is widely recognized as a fundamental component in the design and evaluation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. This study presents a critical and integrative review of three influential works on needs analysis, focusing on their theoretical foundations, methodological approaches, and practical implications for ESP curriculum design. The primary purpose of this review is to examine how needs analysis has been conceptualized and applied in both academic and professional contexts, and to explore its role in aligning language instruction with learners’ real and evolving needs. The study adopts a qualitative critical review methodology. Three selected studies were analyzed comparatively with attention to their aims, research methods, data sources, and interpretations of learners’ needs. Particular emphasis was placed on triangulated approaches to needs analysis and the extent to which these approaches contribute to the validity and reliability of ESP course design. The analysis also considered the balance between institutional requirements and learners’ actual academic and professional language demands. The findings indicate that needs analysis plays a crucial role in identifying gaps between existing ESP courses and learners’ real communicative requirements. Triangulated methods were shown to enhance the accuracy of needs identification by incorporating multiple data sources, such as learner self-assessment, academic tasks, and professional expectations. However, the review also reveals limitations, including the static treatment of learners’ needs and institutional constraints that restrict curriculum flexibility. These issues highlight the risk of misalignment between course content and learners’ changing needs over time. In conclusion, this review underscores the necessity of viewing needs analysis as a continuous and dynamic process rather than a one-time procedure. Ongoing needs analysis can support more responsive and effective ESP/EAP course design, ultimately enabling learners to use language functionally and successfully in real academic and professional environments.
