چکیده مقاله:
this study investigates the influence of emergency sirens and emergency conditions on driver behavior in metropolitan traffic environments. rapid urbanization, increasing traffic density, and the growing demand for emergency response services have intensified the interaction between emergency vehicles and ordinary road users. although emergency sirens are intended to alert drivers and facilitate the movement of ambulances, fire engines, and police vehicles, driver responses often vary significantly depending on traffic congestion, road design, environmental conditions, and individual psychological characteristics. inappropriate reactions, delayed responses, panic, and confusion may reduce the effectiveness of emergency operations while increasing the likelihood of secondary accidents. this research aims to examine the behavioral, psychological, and environmental factors affecting driver decision-making when emergency sirens are activated in urban traffic. the study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology based on previous scientific literature, transportation safety studies, emergency management principles, and behavioral research related to driving performance. the findings suggest that drivers generally recognize the importance of yielding to emergency vehicles, yet practical barriers such as heavy congestion, limited visibility, insufficient knowledge of traffic regulations, and elevated stress levels frequently prevent appropriate responses. furthermore, roadway geometry, intersection configuration, traffic signal timing, weather conditions, and public awareness significantly influence driver behavior during emergency situations. the study emphasizes that improving public education, optimizing intelligent transportation systems, enhancing emergency lane management, and integrating advanced warning technologies can substantially improve driver compliance and emergency vehicle mobility. strengthening cooperation among transportation authorities, emergency organizations, urban planners, and traffic enforcement agencies can further reduce response delays and improve road safety.
