smart fire detection and suppression systems integrate advanced sensors, real-time data analytics, and automated response mechanisms to improve fire safety in buildings. however, their adoption in urban buildings is often hindered by high initial costs and uncertainty about long-term benefits. this research conducts a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of implementing smart fire detection and suppression systems in urban buildings, focusing on shiraz metropolis. using a mixed-method approach combining life-cycle cost analysis, risk assessment modeling, and semi-structured interviews with ۲۰ building owners, facility managers, and fire safety experts, the research evaluates the economic viability of smart systems compared to conventional fire safety systems. findings reveal that smart systems reduce fire-related losses by ۴۵-۶۰% and decrease insurance premiums by ۲۰-۳۰%. the average payback period for smart systems in commercial buildings is ۶-۸ years, while for residential buildings it is ۱۰-۱۲ years. the net present value over a ۲۰-year period is positive for buildings above ۱۰ floors. key factors influencing cost-effectiveness include building height, occupancy type, and local fire department response time. barriers to adoption include high upfront costs (reported by ۷۵% of respondents), lack of technical knowledge (۶۰%), and regulatory uncertainty (۴۵%). the research concludes that smart systems are economically viable for high-rise and high-occupancy buildings and recommends tiered implementation based on building risk profiles, supported by regulatory incentives and financing mechanisms.
