چکیده مقاله:

The mechanical behaviour of high-strength structural bolts plays a key role in the overall behaviour of bolted connections. Hence, providing information about the main characteristics, including the failure mode (such as bolt shank breaking or thread stripping), and the load-displacement curve can be helpful. Although strategies for numerically simulating the response of bolts have been suggested in the literature, there are still margins for improving both accuracy and time efficiency. Therefore, the present study aims to propose criteria and assumptions to mimic the behaviour of partially threaded high-strength bolts in ABAQUS software. The axisymmetric modelling of the bolt, besides the damage simulation, was conducted to capture the bolt fracture in an adequate time with acceptable accuracy. The results indicated the satisfactory accuracy of the proposed method in an efficient time frame. Additionally, the results showed the dependency of the failure mode on the thread length, specifically within the grip length.
