The quest for efficient and safe hydrocarbon extraction in increasingly complex geological formations has driven the oil and gas industry towards innovative technological solutions. Among these, nanotechnology has emerged as a transformative force, particularly in the realm of drilling fluids and wellbore stability. This comprehensive review paper elucidates the multifaceted applications of engineered nanomaterials—including nanosilica, nanoclay, carbon-based nanomaterials, and nanocomposites—in enhancing the performance of water-based and oil-based drilling fluids. The study systematically examines the mechanisms through which nanotechnology mitigates prevalent drilling challenges such as fluid loss control, shale inhibition, rheological modification, lubricity enhancement, and high-temperature high-pressure (HTHP) stability. A dedicated section explores the critical role of nanoparticles in strengthening wellbore walls, preventing collapse, and minimizing formation damage through physical sealing, chemical interaction, and stress reinforcement. The paper also addresses the practical considerations, economic viability, environmental implications, and potential health and safety risks associated with the field deployment of nano-enhanced drilling fluids. By synthesizing cutting-edge research from ۲۰۲۰ to ۲۰۲۵, this article provides a forward-looking perspective on the current state, ongoing challenges, and future trajectory of nanotechnology in drilling engineering, underscoring its pivotal role in enabling sustainable and efficient resource recovery.
