Interaction of Technology and Architectural Creativity in Realization of New Solutions for Flexibility in Architecture

Paying attention to the flexibility of a building is rooted in history and is one of the criteria of sustainable architecture. Successful approaches to flexibility are the result of the optimal interaction of architectural creativity and new technologies. In the traditional era, with the use of massive materials, the interior space was bound by heavy walls, and the architect created multifunctional spaces on micro, medium, and macro scales to respond to flexibility. However, along with the industrial revolution and technological advancement, flexibility approaches took on new faces. In the modern era, very diverse building systems have been invented, each of which has unique capabilities in the field of flexibility in architectural works. This article attempts to analyze the different aspects of these possibilities. The research method in this article is carried out with a qualitative approach, and logical argumentation has been used in the analyses. The article provides discussions in three main sections: first, the definitions of the basic concepts of flexibility are discussed. In the second section, the relationship between technological advances and new flexibility solutions is discussed. In the third section, the topic of the architect's creative ideas and flexibility solutions is discussed, and finally, the subject of complementary sources of inspiration for new flexibility solutions is discussed. In summary of the research results, it can be said that in order to have an appropriate approach to building flexibility, creative ideas and attention to the potential of building systems are of great importance. The architect's contribution in this is to choose among existing technologies. Existing technologies may be directly used or, with combinations of several capabilities, achieve the required solution. Successful flexibility approaches are always the result of the appropriate interaction of technology and the architect's creativity to achieve the desired goals.
