Sustainable Strategies for Construction Waste Management

Construction and demolition (C&D) waste represents one of the largest waste streams worldwide and poses serious environmental, economic, and social challenges. Inefficient waste management practices lead to excessive resource consumption, increased landfill demand, greenhouse gas emissions, and higher project costs. In response to global sustainability goals, numerous countries have shifted toward circular economy principles and sustainable construction strategies. This review aims to systematically examine the current methods, tools, and emerging technologies related to sustainable construction waste management. Through an in depth analysis of recent research, the study identifies key factors influencing waste generation, evaluates waste minimization strategies at different project stages, and investigates innovative solutions including Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital tracking, material passports, and on-site sorting optimization. The findings indicate that design-phase decisions have the greatest impact on waste reduction, with strategies such as modular construction, prefabrication, and design for deconstruction significantly decreasing waste volume. Moreover, sustainable procurement policies and contractor training programs play essential roles in effective waste management. The review also highlights barriers such as lack of regulatory enforcement, insufficient awareness, and technological limitations. By integrating policy frameworks, smart technologies, and circular economy principles, construction waste can be reduced by up to ۵۰ percent according to several global case studies. This study provides a comprehensive analytical overview to support policymakers, contractors, and researchers in advancing sustainable waste management practices and improving environmental performance in the construction industry.
