The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Tools on the Role and Identity of the Abstract English Language Teacher in the Digital Age: A Review Study

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational landscapes has precipitated a paradigm shift in English Language Teaching (ELT), fundamentally challenging and reshaping the professional identity of teachers. This article provides a comprehensive review of the transformation of the English teacher's role from a primary source of linguistic knowledge to a facilitator, learning designer, and ethical guide in the era of Generative AI and adaptive learning systems. Through an extensive analysis of current literature, this study highlights that while the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) and intelligent chatbots has induced anxiety regarding professional displacement, it simultaneously offers opportunities for augmenting human pedagogy. The findings suggest that the teacher's identity is moving towards a "human-in-the-loop" model, where emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and cultural contextualization-traits currently replicable by machines become the core of the profession. The article concludes that to maintain agency, teachers must cultivate AI literacy and redefine their value proposition in the classroom.
