Reinterpreting Spatial Atmosphere: Dialogues between Past and Present in Architecture

This paper investigates the role of atmosphere as a sensory and cultural connector between traditional spatial practices and contemporary architectural design. In an era defined by globalization and the dominance of minimalist aesthetics, contemporary architecture often overlooks the embodied and culturally embedded qualities of traditional spaces, leading to environments that feel disconnected from local identity and human experience. Adopting a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach, the study explores how tangible elements—such as light, materiality, and texture—interact with intangible dimensions like collective memory, perception, and emotional resonance to shape meaningful atmospheres. Rather than treating atmosphere as a stylistic byproduct, this paper frames it as a vital spatial language that interlaces historical continuity with contemporary innovation. By foregrounding atmosphere as an intentional design strategy, the research highlights its potential to reconcile cultural distance and sensory fragmentation in today's architectural landscape. Ultimately, this study calls for a renewed sensitivity to atmospheric qualities in the creation of spaces that not only perform but also foster belonging, rootedness, and sensory presence in an ever-evolving world.
