The Economy Hostage to Politics: Trump's Political Tariffs, Stagflation, and Disrupting World Order

After the end of World War II, a unified world order emerged, but it is now deeply cracking. With an authoritarian but ostensibly transactional approach, Donald Trump is attempting to redefine the role of the United States in the world. The Trump administration's presumptions are that high tariffs will ensure the strengthening of the U.S. manufacturing sector through the costs imposed on other countries and provide the financial resources necessary to cut taxes and reduce national debt, therefore benefiting America. This study examines whether Trump's use of political tariffs and a unilateral foreign policy will alter the world order and enhance the U.S. economy. The research is based on the critical paradigm, utilizing a qualitative document analysis (QDA) method; data were collected from the library and media sources. The study's findings indicate that, first, the U.S. economy is heading towards a mild stagflation phase, with an optimistic outlook and a possible recession, with a cautious view. Second, the U.S., once a staunch defender of national sovereignty and international law, is now changing the world order by returning to the era of dividing the world into "spheres of influence" with the Trump administration's disregard for borders and expansionist tendencies, in addition to playing a role in inciting authoritarian states to behave in violation of international rules.
