چکیده مقاله:

Traditional Iranian architecture represents a profound interaction between humans, nature, and local culture an inherently sustainable model rooted in historical continuity and indigenous wisdom. Traditional Iranian settlements, through environmental knowledge, passive design principles, and the use of local materials such as adobe, brick, stone, and wood, have achieved a balance between biological, climatic, and cultural needs. The objective of this study is to examine and clarify the role of sustainability elements in the structure of traditional Iranian settlements and to analyze how these historical models correspond to the principles of contemporary sustainable architecture and development. The research method is descriptive-analytical. Findings indicate that sustainability elements in these settlements include full climatic adaptation, utilization of natural energies, use of low consumption local materials, introverted spatial structure, and socially stable organization. Components such as windcatchers, central courtyards, pools, thick walls, and shaded verandas not only reduce energy consumption and maintain thermal comfort but also enhance the residents’ environmental and psychological well-being. In these settlements, form follows function, and beauty arises from harmony with the environment constituting what can be termed “sustainable beauty.” Comparative analyses show that the principles of traditional Iranian architecture align with the three main dimensions of sustainable development: environmental, cultural, and economic. These principles can be adapted and modernized through new technologies. Consequently, revisiting and revitalizing these architectural structures can serve as a foundation for contemporary sustainable design a path that, through integrating indigenous knowledge with modern technology, provides a promising direction for improving quality of life, environmental sustainability, and cultural identity within future urban development.
