In vitro efficacy study of Satureja khuzestanica essential oil against the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus

Background: Cystic echinococcosis (hydatid disease) is a significant zoonotic infection caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Current treatment options, primarily benzimidazoles, have limitations, prompting the search for effective natural alternatives. Methods: The protoscolicidal effect of Satureja khuzestanica essential oil (SKEO) was investigated in vitro. Protoscolices were collected from hydatid cysts of naturally infected sheep. Their viability was confirmed using the ۰.۱% eosin exclusion test. The protoscolices were then exposed to various concentrations of SKEO (۱۲۵ to ۱۰۰۰ µg/ml). Results: The results demonstrated a strong dose- and time-dependent protoscolicidal effect. The highest concentration of SKEO (۱۰۰۰ µg/ml) killed ۱۰۰% of protoscolices within ۲۰ minutes. Conclusion: This study confirms the significant efficacy of SKEO as a potent protoscolicidal agent. It is therefore introduced as a promising natural therapeutic candidate for the treatment of hydatid disease.
